Fishley Church – Stone Coffin Investigation – Open Churches Week

Fishley Church near Acle is open every day during Norfolk Open Churches Week, Saturday August 6 to Saturday, August 13.

One of the highlights of the week will be the investigation of the lid of a 13th century stone coffin located in the churchyard, on Friday, August 12, from 11am to 1pm. Dr Julian Litten, an expert in church monuments and mausoleums, based in King’s Lynn will be attempting to unravel who might have been buried in the coffin.

Fishley Church is open daily 10am to 5pm during Open Churches Week and there will be Evensong on Sunday, August 7 at 6pm.

Fishley Church was built before the Norman Conquest. It is an isolated church set on a high point surrounded by agricultural land overlooking the Acle Marshes. The doorway was added during the Norman period. The church was restored in 1861, http://www.stmarys-fishley.com/.
