FANN-XI – Norfolk Festival of Architecture October 10-28, 2011




FANN-XI, Norfolk Association of Architects’ biennial festival celebrating the county’s contemporary architecture returns from Monday, October 10 to Friday, October 28.

A packed programme of special events, many free, features exhibitions, lectures and talks, films, opportunities to visit architects’ studios and new buildings and a special architects art trail in galleries and other venues across Norwich. Phillip Johnson of Populous Architects, partner in charge of the Olympic Stadium project, will be giving the annual Norwich Lecture and there’s the chance for primary school children to go on an architecture ‘course’ at the Sainsbury Centre.

FANNXI Highlights:
 The Work of Norfolk Architects - exhibition at The Forum featuring Norfolk architects' and Norfolk student architects' work from Monday, October 10 to Friday, October 21, 9am to 6pm daily, including McArthur Tring, Allman Woodcock, NPS (South East), Chaplin Farrant, Hudson Architects, Frith Associated, David Marris, CEA and Lucas Hickman Smith.
 The Norwich Lecture – Phillip Johnson of Populous Architects, partner in charge of the Olympic Stadium project: London 2012 Olympic Stadium: Designing to be Different, Thursday, October 13, 6.30pm for 7pm, UEA Lecture Theatre One.
 The Architect Talks - a series of lunchtime talks at The Curve in The Forum featuring architects included in the exhibition
 Perspectives - early evening talks at The Forum on October 11, 12, 18, 19 and 20, starting at 6.30pm.
 Film and Form - a season of architecture themed films at Cinema City Norwich, between September 25 and October 23, www.picturehouses.co.uk/cinema/Cinema_City.
 Norfolk Artists and Architects – FANN-XI Art Trail, a series of exhibitions in venues across Norwich showing art created by Norfolk architects, plus work from Norfolk artists and photographers who get their inspiration from the built environment. Work will be displayed between October 10 and 28. Locations include The Grapevine Gallery, Gallery 18/21, The Bicycle Shop Café Bar, Norwich Playhouse Playroom, No 33 Café Bar and The Workshop Café Bar.
 Open Studios and Open Buildings - throughout Norfolk, October 10-21.
 Children’s half term architecture workshops at Sainsbury Centre Norwich, October 24-28.
 Norfolk Art and Architecture - short films by Norwich University College of the Arts students’ to be shown at The Forum and Sainsbury Centre.
 Norfolk Architecture on the Page - book displays in Norwich at The Book Hive, Jarrold and Waterstones.
 Pecha Kucha 20x20 – quick fire presentations on architectural themes at Cinema City, October 26.

Jon Greenfield, Chair FANN-XI steering group said: “We have created a diverse programme of activities, which we hope will increase interest and understanding of the role that contemporary architecture plays in Norfolk’s cultural life and the changing face of the county. In the year before the Olympics we are also delighted that Philip Johnson will be discussing the Olympic stadium project at The Norwich Lecture and expect a full house at UEA.”
